The public school district that covers the Gunnison-Crested Butte region is the Gunnison Watershed School District. It encompasses:
- Lake Preschool and Kindergarten
- Gunnison Elementary School (PK-5)
- Gunnison Middle School (PK-8)
- Gunnison High School (9-12)
- Crested Butte Community School (K-12)
- Marble Charter School (K-10)
Throughout the District, there is an emphasis on small classroom sizes and individualized learning programs with opportunities such as STEAM education, blended learning, work study, and home bound learning, to place each student on a pathway to college and career readiness.
Gunnison Valley residents voted for two mill levy overrides in recent years to invest in K-12 teachers and support capital improvements for the school district.
Top-Ranked Public Schools
Crested Butte Community School is the 10th ranked high school in the State of Colorado, according to U.S.News & World Report – and earned a “gold medal” in 2017 national rankings. Key factors in the ranking include the percentage of students taking Advanced Placement® course work and exams and a graduation rate of 97%.
The culture of leadership and support among the administration and staff contributes to this high level of success students experience in the local schools.
In addition to the outstanding academics, growing up in the Gunnison Valley offers a whole variety of different extracurricular experiences for kids. Some are tied directly into the school
For such small schools, the Gunnison and Crested Butte communities field an impressive array of official school sports teams including soccer, cross country, track, basketball, volleyball, swimming, wrestling, and others. These teams offer students the opportunity to learn teamwork and represent their schools. Given our remote location, they also have the opportunity to bond with their classmates on longer trips out of the Valley to compete with others.
Like all Gunnison Valley residents, kids who live here have amazing access to outdoor recreation. A whole host of programming through a variety of different organizations, such as the Mountain Sports Team and CB Devo, offers children the opportunity to learn from some of the Valley’s most talented young adults. From the recreational young athlete to kids competing in National competitions, it’s not hard to see why we have kids who go on to be Olympians, both winter and summer.
STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math
Partnerships with the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory and the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum offer scientific and historical learning opportunities. Arts Center and dance programs in both ends of the Valley offer really phenomenal instruction in the visual and performing arts for a community of this size.
