Western Colorado University, located just blocks from downtown Gunnison, anchors the valley’s academic presence.
Western students have access to a truly outstanding education and also access to all of the amazing recreation we have in the Gunnison Valley as well. Former student Peter Noon moved to Gunnison from Alaska and following his graduation has stayed in the Gunnison Valley to work at the University.
Community Events and Classes
Along with an infusion of students to the valley come intellectual initiatives. Faculty, staff, and student groups bring visiting speakers, filmmakers, poets, scientists and politicians to campus. That’s on top of concerts and movie screenings. Many of the events are free and open to the public. Community members can tap into Western’s academic offerings as well by signing up for courses or enrolling in Extended Studies.
Additional Facilities
The university’s state-of-the-art Field House is also available for community use. The facility includes an indoor track, cardio and weight room, an aquatics center, spin studio, climbing wall, and more.
Additionally, Western is home to the ICELab (Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship Lab), an organization devoted to diversifying the Valley’s economy and helping small businesses succeed. The ICELab offers coworking and office space, professional development opportunities, and a network of mentors.
