The Gunnison Valley is teeming with arts and culture. Art Centers in both ends anchor the performing and visual arts scenes while lots of private venues, intimate indoor ones to large outdoor venues, throughout the Valley offer places for acts of all sizes to perform. Museums to visit, music festivals, concerts, and a growing independent film festival every September round out the arts and culture scene in the Gunnison Valley.
In short, our small towns offer big experiences.
Gunnison Valley Arts Scene and Creative District
In 2016, the Town of Crested Butte became a certified Colorado Creative District to bolster the community’s identity as a hub for creative industries. The town boasts numerous art galleries and open air sculptures, and is the host of the nationally recognized Crested Butte Arts Festival each August.
The art scene extends across the Valley. Both Crested Butte and Gunnison have active arts centers where community members can participate in classes or enjoy events that cover the gamut of visual and performance arts.
Music Out in the Open
Residents in the Gunnison Valley can enjoy music throughout the year at numerous venues in Gunnison, Crested Butte, and Mt. Crested Butte but it’s in the summertime that the music scene truly takes flight.
In the north valley, the Center for the Arts in Crested Butte hosts the Alpenglow outdoor concert series every Monday evening from late June through mid-August in downtown Crested Butte. Mt. Crested Butte plays host to Live! From Mt. Crested Butte at the Red Lady Stage at the base of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. The Crested Butte Music Festival is a six-week musical celebration that takes place June-August and draws a diverse range of acts. Last summer, they included opera, baroque, and mariachi!
In Gunnison, the IBar Ranch is the premiere outdoor music venue. Their Castle Creek Guitar Summer Series offers shows on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer. Most often hosting acts on the country or bluegrass side of the spectrum, the also have been diversifying their acts in recent years to appeal to a broader audience.
Summer is festival season in the Gunnison Valley, particularly July 1- August 15. The Crested Butte Music Festival, the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, and the Crested Butte Arts Festival are some of the most well-known events, but others are growing in popularity. The Gunnison Growler Mountain Bike Festival kicks off the season in late May in Gunnison and the Mt. Crested Butte Chili and Beer Festival and the growing Crested Butte Film Festival anchor September.View Full Events Calendar
